JUDY PEREZ, ESQ. President Judy Perez began her legal career in 2002 as a fellow for the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles. In 2003 she entered private practice as an associate for the law firm of Moreno, Becerra, Guerrero & Casillas. After working two and a half years with the Moreno Firm, Ms. Perez went on to become a founding partner of Carrillo & Perez. In 2006, she opened her own firm in downtown Los Angeles where she currently practices personal injury and civil rights law.
Ms. Perez received her Juris Doctorate from Loyola Law School in 2002, and was admitted to the bar in December of that same year. Ms. Perez was born in Los Angeles, California to hardworking Mexican Immigrant parents from Colima and Jalisco. She was raised in Highland Park where she attended St. Ignatius Elementary, then went on to attend Sacred Heart of Jesus High School in Lincoln Heights. Ms. Perez left her familiar neighborhood surroundings and relocated to Westwood while attending UCLA. She then interned for the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) in their Washington, D.C. office. Similarly, while at Loyola Law School, she externed for the Los Angeles MALDEF office. She was also an extern for Judge Teresa Sanchez-Gordon in Los Angeles Superior Court, whom she regards as one of her most important mentors.
Aside from her position on the Latina Lawyers Bar Association Board, Ms. Perez also serves as President-Elect for the Mexican American Bar Association. Ms. Perez recognizes that she has been able overcome barriers due to individuals who believe in opening doors and in LLBA’s mission of helping to advance Latinas in the community and in the legal profession. She credits her accomplishments to those very special mentors and friends who have believed in her along the way as well as the incessant support of her family and parents.
Sylvia Torres-Guillén, Vice President Sylvia Torres-Guillén, a native of East Los Angeles (Boyle Heights), and the daughter of Mexican immigrant parents, has dedicated her legal career to serving the public interest. She was the first to graduate from college in her family and graduated from Harvard Univeristy in 1988 with an A.B. in government. After Harvard, she worked at the Center for Law in the Public Interest. In 1992, she graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law (Boalt Hall). While in law school, she worked at the Berkeley Community Law Center, the Contra Costa County Public Defender's Office and Morrison & Foerster, LLP. After law school, Ms. Torres-Guillén worked first as a law clerk and then as a Deputy Federal Public Defender with the Office of the Federal Public Defender for the Central District of California. Ms. Torres-Guillén has served as counsel in 33 federal criminal trials, including the first Internet hate crime case prosecuted by the federal government in the country, and she has argued before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Ms. Torres-Guillén has taught trial advocacy at Loyola Law School. She has also served for over ten years on the Board of the Mexican-American Bar Foundation. She is married to Victor Cannon and they have two daughters, Chloe Magdalena and Gabriela Joelle.
Gladdys Uribe, Secretary Gladdys Uribe was born and raised in the Santa Ynez Valley into a Mexican immigrant family. Growing up in an immigrant community inspired her to become a lawyer so she could fight some of the injustices she grew up witnessing. She graduated from the UCLA School of Law in 2006 with concentrations in the Critical Race Studies Program and the Public Interest Law & Policy Program. She is an associate attorney with the law firm of Moreno, Becerra & Casillas and handles the firm's immigration caseload. She is currently on the Boards of the Occidental College Latino Alumni Association and Students, Educators, and Lawyers for Access to a Legal Education (SELALE).
Jimena Vasquez, Historian Jimena Vasquez is a bilingual family law staff attorney with Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County, a legal service corporation providing free legal services to low income residents. Prior to her position at Neighborhood Legal Services, Jimena worked at Break the Cycle as a staff attorney providing youth victims of domestic violence with legal services, preventive law-related education, advocacy and support. Jimena has also worked at the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) in the Los Angeles office as a policy analyst, monitoring and advocating for policies to improve the lives of Latino children in California and was also a Women's Law and Public Policy Fellow in Washington D.C., where she worked on reproductive rights and health issues for MALDEF. Jimena received her Juris Doctor from New York University School of Law in 2001 and her Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and History from the University of California, Berkeley in 1998.
Celine Cordero currently serves as the Associate Director of the Office of Public Safety and Homeland Security in the Office of Los Angeles Mayor Antoinio R. Villaraigosa. Her tenure with the Mayor, then Councilmember, began in 2003 where she served as a policy deputy. In 2004, she joined the Villaraigosa for Mayor Campaign team on a full time basis, where she served as a member of the finance team coordinating all fundraising events. She served as a Legislative Deputy in the Mayor's Legislative and Intergovernmental Relations Office prior to her current position. Before joining City government, Ms. Cordero worked as the San Gabriel Valley and East Los Angeles Field Director for the Democratic Party Coordinated Campaign in both 1999 and 2002. She received a B.A. in poliitcal science from California State University, Long Beach and a J.D. from Santa Clara University School of Law. While in law school, she worked at the East San Jose Community Law Center, externed for United States District Judge Robert M. Takasugi, and interned with the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office. Ms. Cordero currently serves on the board of the Mexican American Bar Association and the State Bar Foundation.
Liliana Coronado, Trustee Liliana Coronado is a Deputy Federal Public Defender with the Office of the Federal Public Defender for the Central District of California, in Los Angeles. She joined the Federal Public Defender's Office in 2003. Prior to that, she served as a judicial law clerk to the Honorable Warren J. Ferguson on the Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Ms. Coronado graduated from Stanford Law School in 2002, and Mills College in 1995, with a major in government and minor in ethnic studies. At Stanford, Ms. Coronado served on the board of the Stanford Latino Law Students Association and the board of the Stanford Journal of International Law, served as co-chair of the Volunteer Attorneys Project for the East Palo Alto Community Law Project, and volunteered at the immigration clinic. Prior to attending law school, Ms. Coronado worked for the California Appellate Project, the California Child Care Resource & Referral Network, and Arriba Juntos, a non-profit organization in San Francisco's Mission District. Ms. Coronado was raised in Watsonville, California and is the daughter of Mexican immigrant farm workers.
Glendy Ortiz is a Deputy Public Defender with the Los Angeles County Public Defender's Office. She practices criminal defense, representing indigent clients. Prior to joining the office in February 2002, she clerked at the San Fernando Valley Neighborhood Legal Services center aiding low income clients with immigration and family law matters. She also clerked at the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, focusing on a voter redistricting proposal to maximize the Latino vote. Ms. Ortiz received a Juris Doctor degree from Loyola Law School in 2001.
